We’ll be looking over a Global Skills Report from Coursera that demonstrates how certain countries in the world are approaching remote skills. This report examines a sample size of 109 countries.
Top ranked countries in terms of skills. These countries have the highest skill proficiency, are the best in innovation, along with human capital participation in the labor force. Ranks 1-28, with many countries in Latin America form part of this ranking.
Second best ranked in terms of skills. Similar expectations mentioned in the top rankings can be found in these countries, with minimal differences between the two. Latin America has an equal amount of competitive and cutting-edge countries based on skill competency. Ranks 29-55.
Penultimate rank. Only two countries in Latin America occupy this rank, demonstrating the general competency of Latin American talent through this report. Ranks 56-82. Ironically, North America is mostly composed of emerging competencies, with the exception of Mexico.
Lowest ranking countries. No Latin American countries are part of this rank, demonstrating the infrastructure in place to properly attend to nearshoring needs for North America. These countries are mostly found in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Different countries offer different services or approaches to those same services, thus finding talent that suit your needs properly will be key to finding proper success. Brazil is the top destination for IT outsourcing in latin america, considering its close proximity to the US and a lower language barrier because of the amount of the population that speak english. Latin America outsourcing using talent from Brazil gives you the biggest variety for specialists with new technologies. With their increased bet on machine learning, AI and data science, you’d be hard pressed to not include Brazilian talent in your search for a nearshoring team.
Colombia provides a similar split between technical and business oriented talent like in Brazil, though with a preference for the technical side. They especially are preparing their citizens for participating in decision making and project leadership, perfect if your talent needs a lead developer or a project manager.
Nearshore software development in Mexico is mostly focused on the technical side of software development, with an even bigger focus on data science. Mexico has been the favored region to practice nearshoring with for a while now, meaning you’re likely to find adequate talent from the closest region to onshore options, in the case of the united states.
Chile is a particularly interesting choice to consider, given it’s goals of improving its digital competencies, and it’s cutting-edge approach to technology. It’s projected to grow within the tech field by almost USD 4 billion by 2027, meaning hiring talent from Chile will become common place within the industry in no time at all.
Of all the options, Peru is the single option that favors business development over the technical side of software development. Of course, it’s not slacking in tech either, but the preference is there.
